Needs Renovation -- 2004-08-20
The "Joe" is in need of some upgrade and some renovation. Sitting down the left field line I couldn't help but notice that there is so much foul territory I felt like I was 2 states away from the game. The outfield fences are way too deep for minor league baseball, the players must feel like they have to hit one that would leave Yosemite to get a homerun. I love stadiums with old time feel to them, but this one looks like it was never a nice stadium, no atmosphere at all, too big to have any kind of intimate feeling when that is what minor league baseball is all about.

Why no listing yet? -- 2002-07-05
According to various websites and articles, Joe W. Davis Stadium is simply a concrete mausoleum. The writers fail to realize that it is the game of baseball that makes the event special, not necessarily where they play.
I am sure that there are many stadiums worse and many that are better. Davis Stadium (or "the Joe") probably falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. First of all, it is multi-purpose, and most minor league stadiums these days are not. Football and soccer are played there in the fall months. As a result, much of the facility's seating is down the third base line. Promotions and events for the Stars, the Joe's main tenant, seem to be in line with other teams at the "AA" level.
Huntsville is a town that probably doesn't get the attention that it should. It is the home of the US Space Camp and has the highest per capita income in the Southeast (even higher than Atlanta). So why don't the Stars draw better? There have been threats to move the team elsewhere, but where would they go?
That said, good seats seem to be available. I believe that the Stars have won three Southern Leauge championships since 1985, and they are the current co-Champions. So why no listing yet? Strange, indeed.
