Well Worth the Trip -- 2008-07-29

I visited the Mudcats twice last summer and both times were great experiences. I think the best thing about this stadium, outside the quality of double A baseball, is the way it merges the classic minor league baseball stadium feel with some more modern amenities. The look of the field and outfield wall is very old-school and gives you the feel that this team has been in Zebulon for a long time, which it has. The good seating and food choices, on the other hand, is very high quality. The only thing that I thought was kind of strange was that the netting behind home plate was extended beyond where most baseball teams have it placed, which can obscure one's view. The other cool thing about this stadium is that you can get seats in the restaurant for a very reasonable price and watch the game from seats facing the field, while sitting in an air-conditioned Cattails Restaraunt (as in the plant) with a waitress to serve you any food or drinks you might want. It obviously is not the classic baseball experience, but if you ever wanted to see what luxury box seating was like, this is certainly the most inexpensive way to experience it. Plus, even these seats are really close to the field. I enjoyed both games I went to from this location (both times I went with friends who wanted to try it out). The food in the restaraunt was good too. Their pulled pork was very spicey, but good, as was everything else my friends and I tried. Supposedly the restaurant is open year round too. If you are in the area and have the time to venture out to Zebulon, it is worth the trip. After the Durham Bulls, this is the second best minor league option in the area in my estimation.

    Mudcats Stadium -- 2001-07-17

I believe that for a Double A team, this has to be one of the best stadiums for this level of baseball. This park seats about 10,000 but from behind the plate to 3/4 of the way down the baselines you feel like you are a part of the game. The general admission seating is not the best, it's at an odd angle and down the first baseline the sun is in your face for the first 3 innings of a game. Food is relatively cheap and they have a decent selection to choose from. Getting to the park is an adventure however, 40 minutes from Raleigh and if you aren't totally sure how to get there it could be longer. Parking is $2.00 and right next to the stadium, so that is helpful. All in all, being a double A club, I believe that seeing a Mudcats game is well worth a trip.
