    Outstanding Single A Park -- 2002-06-25

My family and I have been coming to Fieldcrest Stadium since its inception about six years ago. It started as the SALY single A franchise of the Phillies and was known simply as the Piedmont Phillies. It then became the Boll Weevils with a bizarre mascot who resembled a giant cockroach. After the late Dale Earnhardt bought part of the team, it then became the Intimidators and the uniforms went to black and souvenir sales increased dramatically.

This is one of the nicest single A parks I've ever seen, second only to the Charleston SC Riverdogs park on the Ashley River. It has very little foul territory and the seats are very close to the action. Our favorite place to sit is on the third base side just past the dugouts in the first row. The grand stand takes an angle at this point so that choppers hit down the third base line ultimately end up there. The restraining fence is approximately three feet off the ground and it is a simple matter to lean over with your glove and field a foul ball. Often, you can hear the third base coach talking to the runners you are so close. These are $7 seats and general admission is only $5 (or less).

The food is well above average for ballpark food. The chicken fingers are outstanding. The beer selection is decent, although I was once chased out of the "family" (no alcohol) section for quaffing an O'Doul's. The sweet 16 year old usherette was not convinced it was not a beer. "Weyull, it looks lahk a beer." I moved.

The fans are very loyal and knowledgeable. American Legion ball is very strong in that area and baseball has a high priority.

Silly contests are held between innings. I was once selected to fly a balsa wood airplane into a hula hoop to win a plane ticket to Las Vegas. The only problem was their plane had broken, so I offered to make a paper airplane. As I stood in front of the home dugout with my creation, aiming at the hula hoop about 25 feet away, I asked the players for advice. "Throw it hard," they advised. I did, and the plane did a perfect loop and then crashed into the ground. Oh well. A week later they asked me to make another paper airplane so they could continue the contest.

They also sponsor a 5k road race that starts in right field and winds out of the stadium and back. Other games include the ubiquitous dizzy bat, water balloon toss, and the chip shot into the bull pen golf shot contest. Always a hit.

Very easy to get to off I-85. One buck to park and reasonably priced tickets. Highly recommended

A Great Day At The Ballgame -- 2001-06-07

This makes for one of the truly enjoyable minor league baseball experiences anywhere in the Carolinas. I am currently in my first year as "The Voice Of Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium" - aka the PA announcer for the Intimidators. I am captivated by the view, the atmosphere and the cameraderie that you can feel in the stands. Check the Intimidators out on the web at www.intimidatorsbaseball.com. You'll be glad you did.
