    Good new one -- 2004-06-01

Memphis pulls off the "throwback park" as well as anyone.

First, the stadium is gorgeous. The park sneaks up on you from behind old brick buildings. The carnival atmosphere at this stadium sets the tone. The baseball-quilt plaza features an opening band. Cheerleaders greet you at the door. There is a kids' area that rivals any playground I've seen. There was a large crowd on hand the evening I attended, but the several acres of walking area around the park made the place comfortable for all.

I was disappointed that the stadium was built out of the same blueprint as Louisville, featuring the "shallow rake" seating bowl. This makes for lousy sightlines, and blocked views for everyone anytime someone in the park gets up for peanuts. If you're not 6-foot, don't bother with the lower level. Luckily, the charm of Autozone Park overcomes this tragic flaw.

The organist creates an old-time baseball feel. There is very little pop music or sound effects. Nor are there any on-field promotions. A welcome side-effect of the organist is that it seems to calm the crowd. While in other parks youngsters grow restless after a few innings, and start interupting entire sections, they are extremely well-behaved here.

Rockey, the Redbird's mascot, seems like a token gesture. I only saw him once, driving an ATV around the warning track. He spent the rest of the game signing autographs behind the concourse. The cheerleaders are the entertainment here, and they are excellent. Baseball purists may scoff at such a troupe, but I thought they added to the fun, exciting, and friendly atmosphere at the Zone.

The Redbirds do a fine job promoting their team and stadium around the city. The stadium is the centerpiece of the tourist district and downtown revitalization projects.

I was at AutoZone in 2000 and I must say that it is beautiful. They were able to incorperate the buildings next door for lighting and the lighting reminds me of the old time major league parks with the huge light towers. Nice throw-back. But, with the large capacity (which was filled the two times I was there) many of the kids did not get to see the mascot (has that changed???), Unfortunately, the stadium was built with such a shallow rake that it was hard to see home plate from the outfield seats (even sent a photo to a local sportswriter). Let's not forget, though, the people. They were great!!!

    Wonderful experience -- 2001-06-08

I've been several times to AutoZone Park. Go early and listen to the live band in the plaza. Be sure and get some BBQ chicken nachos from the Rendezvous stand in the park. If you have kids, the $5 bluff tickets are a good deal. You sit on the grass on a hill behind the left field wall. It has a playground for the kids beside the bluff.

Great park -- a lot of fun!

    Great Ballpark. -- 2001-06-01

Simply put, this is an absolutely beautiful yard. I went last year (2000) on a trip up from New Orleans. I was literally amazed. What a fantastic place to watch a ballgame. Do yourself a favor and go early. Take the time to walk all the way around the park. Stop and watch the pitchers warming up in the bullpen.

    Great Park -- 2001-02-12

I visited Autozone Park on its first game ever, when the Cardinals played the Redbirds in an exhibition game. It's a great park. Be sure to eat at Rendevouz across the street for some incredible ribs.
