Hi Terry! -- 2005-10-29
This is pretty cool that I saw your name here. Anyway, I think that Mayo Field is pretty sweet. I've seen a bunch of Honkers games there just like every kid in Rochester who likes baseball. I remember seeing some Aces games there too. I like it when a train goes by on the tracks that are right next to the field. It's also fun seeing all the little kids go running for foul balls and remembering that I used to do the same thing.
btw, thanks for the Ken Burns Baseball DVDs Terry =)

History of Mayo Field -- 2001-08-31
Baseball has been played at Mayo Field for nearly 100 years. The land on which the ballpark sits was donated to the city by the Mayo brothers with the proviso that it be used for the game of baseball. In the 1920's Swede Risberg - one of the banned-for-life Black Sox - played semi-pro ball on this field for the Rochester Aces. In the late 40's and early 50's, a very high caliber, semi-pro league, the Southern Minny, had a franchise in Rochester. Young stars such as Bill Skowron played in the league as well as a number of Negro League stars, including "Double Duty" Radcliff and a young Sam Jones. It was concluded that the manager had gone too far, however, when he wanted to bring a 16 year old kid from Alabama to play for Rochester. The kid's name was "Mays". I wonder what ever happened to him.
The ballpark sits on the banks of the Zumbro river on the edge of downtown Rochester. The illuminated buildings of the Mayo Clinic provide a scenic backdrop to night games and a reminder of the park's origin.
