State College Spikes -- 2007-03-03
This team is now the "State College Spikes." With a brand new park right next to Penn State's football stadium, the team has a much better home with tons of entertainment and a good baseball environment.Zach
Told You So!!! -- 2007-02-01
What a dump! New Jersey Cardinals sold to State College. They priced themselves right out of business. The front office was a bunch of monkeys and now they are all jobless. Who didn't see that coming!Gregg
Unbelievable -- 2005-07-28
My first visit to the NJ Cardinals was last night (7/27). I love baseball, but this was a carnival at best... GREAT for kids, but misery for baseball fans expecting to see a game. It's had to believe that ball players can focus on their game and development with carnival barkers constantly distracting attention from the game... contests, giveaways, innane activity before the game, during inning breaks, AND during play.. The game is an after thought.. The guy who owns this team must have been the founder of Chucky Cheese. My party of four will stick to baseball, thankyou.

Still a Dump! -- 2004-08-04
I made a return visit to Skylands Park last week and I was even more disappointed that I was last year.
The optimism of the a bright, sunny afternoon quicly wore off after I realized that the NJ Cardinals do not keep this place clean. There trash cans in the seating bowl were overflowing halfway through the game and nobody emptied them (and this was a sixteen inning game!). The trash just piled up and eventually over the sides. In the walkways to the seating area there was a pile of accumlated bird droppings under a light that nobody clean up, it was a disgusting health hazard!
The staff leaves a lot to be desired. The "Farmer" mascot sat behind us (the SI Yankees Booster Club) and blew a whistle in our ears in an effort to drown out our cheering. This only hurt our ears and he refused to move when we asked him. Instead of walking away, he got into a heated debate with some vistors & reported cursed at a girl. I e-mailed the GM, and I guess he cannot be bothered to answer me.
Spend your money somewhere else in New Jersey. It's obvious that the NJ Cards don't appreciate fans of their rivals. Go to Trenton, Lakewood, or Somerset!

What a Dump! -- 2003-09-03
I finally made a trip to the Skylands Park in Augusta,NJ last night and to say I was disappointed was an understatement.
Located in the middle of nowhere, you would think that there would be signs to let you know your getting close to the park, but there is not. Upon arrival, you are charged to park ($4) in a filthy parking lot. You think after charging $4 to park in the great wide open they would clean the lot.
The front of the ballpark looks like a rec room of a Catskills resort. At last night's game, there was garbage on and around the seats. At one point, a pipe protruding from the back of the dugout shot out water into the first row behind the dugout. I assume it was pumping out rain water, but if someone was sitting out in that seat their feet would have been soaked.
Some of this water made its way down to the field, onto the part dirt/part gravel track that encircled the playing field, that happened to have stray pieces of garbage (peanut bags) on it.
The field was in lousy shape to begin with due to the rain was being tended to by the head groundkeeper with two or three kids who looked like he pulled them off the street and asked them if they wanted to make a few extra bucks. The look of concern was on SI Yankees mgr. Andy Stankiewicz's face as he inspected the field was warranted, as in the top of the second inning, one if his players twisted his ankle on the wet field rounding 1st. After a 10 minute dilberation between both managers & umpires, the game was suspended (later cancelled).
The plaques for the Sussex Co. Sports HOF posted around the ballpark where covered in bird droppings & crooked. The (overpriced) gift shop was a few tables set up under a tarp.(You would think during the last game of the season they would offer discounts on the mechandise to get rid of it, but NO.
What a joke!

nice try -- 2002-07-02
I've been to dozens of minor league parks, and this one is by far the least attractive. When the stadium was built, It looked nice from the road. But the outfield wall wasn't done until halfway through the first year. Now the wall sports more than 80 advertisements on it. Holy propaganda, Batman. The place is also home to the Sussex County Sports Hall of Fame. I'm sure county legends like Chris Jent and Don Smolyn are pleased to know their plaques are dirty and crooked. And a set of 2001 New Jersey Cardinals tradinc cards books at about $2. So stop charging $6 for card of guys who probably won't sniff the big leagues.

Rip-off alley -- 2001-10-11
This is the epitome of why people don't watch baseball anymore...rude staff, very expensive concessions which are characterized by long lines and lousy food, a nice field and good sightlines from the stands, but incredibly stupid, distracting giveaways. They actually offered to give away a tiny prize if the pitcher struck out the opposition in a given inning on 9 PITCHES! I asked if anyone in the league had done that in the last year, and they answered, "Not that we know of." This operation has only one goal--to getr as much out of your wallet as they can. Best example--they have a completely rural stadium with their own parking lot, yet they're the only team in the NYP league that charges for parking (and exhorbinantly, as well. Save your money, go to Trenton or Lakewood, or even to NY or Philly, it will cost about the same.

Real Professional Baseball--Trenton on NJ Cardinals -- 2001-08-05
Please note that there are only two Teams in NJ that are associated with major leg. baseball. Trenton and the NJ Cardinals in Sussex county. The others are fun but a bit "fake." With weekend traffic less than 1 1/2 hours from the GW Bridge and NYC...take the trip fun and cheap.
