Yet another 5/3 -- 2003-07-26
Toledo, Dayton, and now GR. The audacity of a lower A club charging $9.00 when some AAA teams charge less (see Toledo). Sheesh! You also get nailed $2 parking. There's no way around it. Approaching 5/3 Ballpark one may think he's entering a country club. It doesn't look like a baseball stadium at all from the outside. Once inside you still get that Caddyshack feeling as the crowd is definitely on the upper end of the socio-economic scale (read all white). Not surprising when the ballpark is miles outside the city. The relative noiselessness of the crowd also echoes this point. 2/3's of the seats are bleachers which can make for an unsettling sitting experience( remember $9?). And there is no cover in the seating area at all. A sudden cloudburst on my visit made for a mad stampede to the aisles.

Old Kent is a place for families, but not the best for the vehement baseball fan. The promotions are incredibly intense, and the atmosphere is geared toward children and their parents. It is a well kept park, and one of the best attended teams in all of A ball. Great location right off of the highway. A little too much pizzazz, but overall a good time.

My visit to Old Kent Park -- 2001-07-17
I was back visiting family in the area and decided to see what baseball would have been like for me had I stayed in Michigan rather than moved to California and become an A's fan.
The park is great and could be the site of many enjoyable baseball experiences were it not for management (ain't that always the way.)
All the attention of the patrons is diverted away from the baseball by Announcers-From-Heck who interrupt with dances, races, announcements, birthdays, singing, music, god only knew what, not only between innings but between at-bats and sometimes even between swings. I can only assume this is because people can't be bothered to learn how to pay attention to boring old baseball. sheesh.
It was effectively impossible to watch and enjoy the game for this reason. The field is poorly lit, unlike the stands. The talent in not too terrible, considering it is A ball. The food was fine. Again, the park is beautiful. Too bad it's run by morons.

Beautiful Park - The whole experience is geared to entertain fans! -- 2001-07-07
Old Kent Park is beautiful!
The Whitecaps expierence is wonderful from top to bottom. The stadium is great. There's plenty of parking. Prices are right. A whole family can enjoy a game for a reasonable price. The activities are fun. The food is good. The quality of A league ball, though not the best, is made enjoyable knowing that the players are giving their best.
You will definitely enjoy an evening with the Whitecaps.
