It is one of the best stadiums -- 2008-04-25

It was one of the best stadiums in the country and in the minor league system and everything.

    Not A Bad Little Stadium -- 2003-02-19

I used to go to Red Barons games in the early '90s, then stopped when I moved away and now that I'm pretty close -- New York, an hour and a half away -- I go again when I can.

I've been to a lot of stadiums. As long as you're on the ground level, this one is great. You hear a lot about this being a "cookie cutter" stadium -- and I'll say the Astroturf is awful -- but if you're anywhere but the cheap, high seats, you're in for quite a sight. It's an intimate stadium.

Since the stadium (and the team) is owned by Lackawanna County, there's a focus on keeping the costs down. Instead of paying $14 or more for premium seats in other stadiums I've been to, you're paying $7.50 ... and the seats are better.

I've had mixed success in getting good seats. Sometimes I've gotten front row seats behind home plate in waiting until about an hour before game time; other times I've gotten nose-bleed tickets by buying in advance. There's really no rhyme or reason. My opinion: Don't get the seats in the upper deck, particularly the ones that are way up there. It doesn't make for an enjoyable experience and made me dizzy, quite frankly.

Food. If you get it at the Stadium Club -- which is open year-round -- it's terrific. My wife and I go there every chance we get. The other food, behind the counter, well, I don't think it's all that special although I hear the cheesesteak's pretty good.

Scoreboards. They put new ones in, with video, during the 2002 season and they really enhance the play.

Warning: It's Astroturf and that's hard to get used to, unless you're a Phillies fan like me. (I don't know whether they'll change it when the new ballpark is ready, in 2004).

Lackawanna County Stadium, An Overview -- 2002-08-21

Since I have gone to Red Barons games for 7 years, I'll give you a detailed description. Parking is 2 bucks, but if you get there like 3 hours before game, you park for free. If you come that early, autograph seekers will see the visiting bus arrive and the clubhouse is towards the top of the hill (to the left). Home players drive their own cars, so waiting by the Stadium Club entrance is good. During the game, the upper decks have less choice in food (standard ballpark fare), but plenty of foul balls arrive [but please catch them, people in the lower deck don't always wait for it to come back down]. Visiting players normally come out first, and the only field entrance (besides the little used bullpen door) is under the roof of the dugout. Same applies for the Red Barons. Recently, more people have been waiting for Red Barons signatures (maybe the winning record has to do with it). Most Barons will forget about the umpires and sign right in front of them. When the players don't sign before the game, they almost always sign after outside the clubhouse door. The seats are excellent, but the higher rows in the upper deck have that nose bleed feeling (and the walkway seems smaller, too). Prices are okay all round. The field dimensions are those of the Vet. The turf was replaced once, I believe, and a new scoreboard was installed during the 2002 season. Pay attention for out of town scores, they scroll by quick on the PNC scoreboard.

While users might wonder what Yankee Stadium has to do with Scranton-Wilkes Barre, the stadium is actually an intertesting site. Nestled in a valley along the freeway, seating around the stadium offer an interesting view of the surrounding mountains. Inside, there are no bad seats and the multi-purpose turf, though somewhat looked down on in baseball circles today, makes the field look sparkling. The food and drinks are comparable to other minor league parks. The stadium lacks the charm of amny of the other fine AAA parks such as Indianapolis, Rochester and Louisville, but serves its purpose in allowing the fans to watch the game in comfort.

    Overall Review -- 2001-06-10

The stadium has some nice features like the Stadium Club Restaurant. They have some of the best food you could eat in a stadium. There is not really a bad view of the field from the seats. They have good dimensions like the centerfield distance of 408feet. That is just like Yankee Stadium which is the best stadium of all the time and they are the best team of all time.
