My father and I attended the first Redbirds game on April 22, 1982, when minor league baseball returned to Louisville after a long, painful absence. Since then I have been to approximately 350 games in Louisville. The old Cardinal Stadium was a nice facility, and it had an interesting "short porch" in right field that benefited left handed power hitters. The aluminum football bleachers in right field, however, were a detriment to the asthetics of the field. Plus, I've never, never liked artificial playing surfaces in any sport. I never worried about rainouts, though.
Louisville Slugger Field is one of the best baseball parks I've ever seen. The sun can be problems at times, but the arrangement of the seats and the asthetic qualities of he park are among the best in the nation. They've successfully incorporated a 150 year old building into the design of the ballpark. One of the best features of Louisville's new park is that one can still watch the game while waiting for a brat or a fried bologna sandwich at the concession stands.
I have sat in every part of the park, including the berm in left center field, and I haven't found a serious flaw yet. The berm is a little too steep. I kept sliding downward throughout the game. the bleachers are a little too far from the action, but they provide an excellent view of the stadium and the playing field. Having a two year old daughter, I have found that the picnic tables on the Overlook Pavillion are a great place to let her cut loose a little bit. the upper deck seats are terrific, and the reserved seats near the playing field are superb. PAY ATTENTION! They are close to the action. I often feel inclined to take my ball glove for protection (this is not a complaint, btw).
I wish Louisville would start their Sunday games at 2 p.m. instead of 1 p.m. It makes it hard to get to the park after church, especially with a family in tow.
It is a great place to watch baseball.

Louisville Slugger Field is undoubtedly one of the finest minor-league parks across the nation. It sparkles in ways that old Cardinal Stadium could never dream of. Evening games are a little difficult to watch down the right field line because of the sunset, but all other seats, including the lawn seats in center field are good bargains. The riverwalk along the Ohio River as well as the Louisville Slugger Museum several blocks away are must sees for anyone visiting the area. Buddy the Bat keeps the crowd up-beat and promotions nearly every night are extremely family-friendly. The day we visited, it was camera night where fans were allowed onto the field for autographs and pictures of the Riverbats. Players included former major leaguers Wilton Guerrero, DT Cromer, Chris Sexton and Matt Walbeck as well as many of the Reds finest up and coming prospects. The only down side was that fans who caught balls hit into the seats during batting practice were forced to return them. But all-in-all, Slugger Field is at the top of its game all the way around. It joins BellSouth Park in Chattanooga as a gem in the Reds organization and if sketches of the future Great American Ballpark in the Queen City take shape, the Reds and their affiliates will have much to be proud of.
