New Ballpark -- 2004-01-06

The Riverhawks have signed on with the city of Loves Park, IL (just northeast of Rockford)for a new stadium, scheduled to open in 2005. The new park will have a capacity of about 3500, and will be located along I-90, just north of Riverside.

Odd little park -- 2002-09-09

Marinelli Field is situated in Blackhawk Park, right on the Rock River. It's a relatively new park (opened in the late 1980s), but has narrow staircases and inconvenient concessions just like some of the older WPA parks. The grandstand behind home plate is covered, and was very crowded the day we were there (the temperature was in the low nineties). Not a bad place to see a game; the sightlines are clear, unless you're sitting behind a light pole (they're placed in front of the stands), but the seats are kind of far from the playing field.

Talking to the staff on 8/11, I was told that the Riverhawks had already made enough money to pay for their lease in 2003. They're trying to get support (and open land...about 85 acres) for a ballpark out near U.S. 20 (locally known as the bypass). Frontier League ball might be just big enough for Rockford.
