A Night at McBride Stadium with the Richmond Roosters -- 2005-06-10

Spending a night at McBride Stadium to watch the Richmond Roosters of the Independent Frontier League is a real treat. It is like stepping back in time as the stadium was used by the Detroit Tigers "Class D" Richmond Tigers in the early 1950's, and it still has the charm of that era. The Roosters management has made many improvements to the ballpark in the last couple of years. They offer a very family and fan friendly environment where you can enjoy watching a baseball game the way the game was meant to be played. The staff can be seen throughout the game walking through the stands attending to their fans. I would much rather make the trip to Richmond to take in a game than to attend a major league game. Kudos to the Roosters and I hope you enjoy many years of success!

    McBride Stadium -- 2003-09-06

I have been to Don McBride stadium twice, in 1997 and 2003. I was very impressed by the improvements over the years. The basic ballpark is still from the late 1940s, and the covered seats don't give a good view of the park. The side bleachers, picnic berm and party areas are all nice places to see a game. The stadium has capacity of about 1800. The Frontier League is approximately equivalent to a short season class A league, but because the league is not part of the National Association, the teams are not subsidized by a major league organization. They have to have good teams, good promotions and community sponsorships to be successful. The Roosters have been successful in these areas. The best tip I can give anyone who wants to see the stadium is to get off I-70 at exit 149A, as you will get lost if you use another of the Richmond exits.

An evening at McBide Stadium is a real treat! It's a combination of the old semi-pro games that were prevelant in the Midwest and modern fan-envolvment minor league games. Cozy little park that even has rooftop bleachers across the street.

A neat team in a neat, little city. -- 2000-12-24

The Richmond Roosters play in a small, WPA era stadium that is not far from the downtown. The quality of the play is exceptional and I was quite surprised at the level of competition in the Frontier League. I went as a skeptic and left as a fan.

If you are ever in that part of Indiana, give it a try. The prices are reasonable, the kids stay involved and it is a lovely evening.

We stayed in Richmond after the game and enjoyed the community. We are from New England, but will return to see more Frontier League games this summer!
