    Stadium Review for 2003 -- 2003-09-14

    Overall Rating: A

    Facility A

The stadium is located in downtown Akron. The view is of a wonderful urban setting of the buildings surrounding the ballpark. Our directions didn't help much maybe the construction crossed us up. Coming from out of town stay on OH-59 and take a right on Main Street and run that to the ballpark. We parked across the street for $5 but the staff told us (in the stadium) that a large parking garage next to right field is open to the public and is free.

There is a restaurant on site (Menches Bros) that looked pretty good and might be a good choice for night games. The box seats were comfortable and a good deal. Try to avoid the first base seats for night games. The sun will be right in your face until it goes behind the new cardiac wing of the hospital.

Bleacher seats in right make for a short home run porch. The grass berm seating was popular with families. Group party locations are scattered around the park. Good crowd and they really support the team here. I saw the team merchandise all over the ballpark, a good sign of fan support.

The souvenir store is large and well stocked with a good selection. Staff is professional and very friendly. Some of the ushers are up in age and while helpful they may not take you down to your seat and wipe it off if that is important to you.

The deli down behind right field was popular.

    Value B+

Good value, no doubt about that. Reserved box seats are just $9 and bleachers a buck less. Food was pretty good and a nice varied selection.

The season ticket holder next to us was in the ballpark early for a cook out and autograph session with the players. Nice to see the season ticket holders get a nice comp. Food was good and prices in line with other ballparks.

    Atmosphere B+

The on field person was ok. They did the usual on field promotions. The mascot didn't do too much. I think Orbit should be given a bigger role. The dancing “Batman” proves that even overweight white guys can be cool. While the team was out of the game early on the fans continued to support their team until the end of the game.

    Odds and Ends

When I called for tickets the person I talked to was very professional and knew what they were doing. Contrast this with the person from Lake County. Informed that I was calling long distance and out of state he still put me on hold twice while trying to enter my Elkridge, MD zip code. When I am calling on my dime don't make me wait so you can enter information on your database. Some common sense would be a plus. I was so put off by this (didn't trust them to mail the tickets to me) that I just had them leave our Lake County tickets for will call.

    Canal Park -- 2001-09-03

Cozy ball park, with excellent seating alround. Front row seats come right up beside the dugouts. Prior to game, players will give autographs, at dugout. Just a great minor league park.

    Nice, new park -- 2001-06-12

The downtown setting is the way baseball should be. Views of buildings instead of a parking lot and a freeway. Reminds me somewhat of Bulls Stadium in Durham, NC, without some of the nostalgic touches.

The food was average ballpark fare. With all the room for restaurants, you would think they would get something a little unusual. Good beer selection. Nice that they serve hot chocolate because it is still cold in May in Ohio.

The batmen (adult batboys) provide great entertainment and enthusiasm. They truly love their jobs and it shows. I like to see people who enjoy their work and enjoy being part of the crowd.

Canal Park is very nice -- 2001-05-22

Canal Park is a great place to see a game. First of all, it looks strikingly like Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Also, every seat in the house is very close to the action. The most interesting touch, though, may be the bullpens located close to the bleachers. This allows fans the oppurtunity to talk to and "razz" the opposing pitchers. This is a very nice minor league yard.
