Stockton to remain in California League -- 2002-01-20

The owners of the Mudville Nine and Visalia Oaks have "traded franchises. As such, Stockton will remain in the Calfornia League. The new owner has announced the franchise will once again be known as the Stockton Ports.

Apparently the new stadium is a dead issue. The Cal League is now talking about contraction from ten teams to eight with the two franchises being "transfered" to the Carolina League. One of the teams rumored to go to Carolina is the Mudville Nine.

In response the Stockton City Council has applied to the independent Western Baseball League for a franchise and permission to operate it in 2002. The Cal League's team's lease on the stadium expires in September 2001. So they are apparently telling the Mudville Nine to not let the door hit them in the sliding pads on their way out. The City Council has stated the retention of professional baseball in Stockton is a "quality of life issue" and they plan to operate the team as an "amenity" for their citizens. Wow! How refreshing!

Hope for the Mudville Nine -- 2001-07-04

I just recently heard from a Mudville offical they are re-approaching the Stockton City Fathers regarding support for a new downtown stadium. They are optimistic(of course) and expect to have an answer fairly soon. You should visit the web site of HNTB architects and click on 'minor league' and take a look at their design for Stockton. Wow......it will be the best minor league ballpark anywhere!

Billy Hebert Field is an old park, I think the oldest in the league, which is actually a great place to see a game. The seats between the dugouts are real close to the field, and since there aren’t any fans, you almost feel like you’re right there with the players and coaches (you can hear almost everything they say). They have a barbecue behind the third base grandstand which makes the whole place smell good, and the help is very friendly. The facilities are antiquated, for example the players have to get off the bus behind the left field fence and walk across the outfield, and the scoreboard is perpetually missing lights, but overall it’s a nice old place. The team is probably moving to Ventura, or may even fold altogether, which is a bit of a shame.

    I lost Stockton Ports -- 2001-03-25

While I appreciate the historical reference of Mudville Nine, as a long-time California League fan, I liked Stockton Ports name better.
