Stadium Review for 2003 -- 2003-09-20
Overall Rating: C+
Facility C-
Hunter Wright Stadium is located north of town. Signs are posted but are small and could be missed. The remote location makes the stadium a target for vandalism, which is a problem here. The parking lot is gravel but some spaces are marked.
Dysfunctional seating area. Walking up from the gate we pass under an arch and into the seating area. Actually there are two seating areas. The lower one on the third base line is an easy walk from the front gate. The upper level can be reached by walking through the seating area or around the building and up a hill. The upper level has bathrooms and a small concession stand. The lower level has the primary concession stand and the souvenir store.
The reserve seats are adequate but lack legroom. Since the staff is non-existent save $2 and purchase General Admission seats at $3 and sit in the reserve area if you desire. General Admission seats here are metal bleachers and are located past the reserve seating area. On the third base line there are some picnic tables, which offer a view of the field.
Atmosphere B
An ad in the paper mentioned that a promotion would be announced but we did not see it. A good crowd was on hand for the 4th of July night game. A fireworks display was set for the fifth. The team has a great PA announcer and he carries the operation. They have the normal on-field activities but here they appear reserved just for kids. The mascot made just two appearances and his dance on the dugout was the hyped event.
Value A-
Ticket and food prices are a good deal. We tried the Mets Pie ($4) and it was good but a little dry. Some taco sauce would have been great. Karen ranked the chili cheese dog at a #6, which is a good rating for her. One down side, the concession lines were slow. The program for a $1 is a waste of money.
Odds and Ends
The souvenir store here is a waste of your time. I got tired of having to bend over and look into a small window to see what they had. Selection appeared limited.
The big hit tonight was the kittens. When we walked over to our seats to the left of home plate and could see two small kittens running around the seating area. There is a space under the seats where they lived. I told my wife that the mom was nearby but didn't want to come out and play. A pitcher for Bristol wondered if they were the new mascots. They proved to be popular with the kids who divided into two groups. The boys wanted to bring them home and the girls felt that they should stay and be free. The kids managed to bring a staff member over to look at kitties. We saw some of the staff over at the archway but none on the hill.
The couple behind us came here because there was nothing on TV, not a ringing endorsement.
The location and design of the facility are major drawbacks. I would start by getting rid of the klaxon horn sound before some of the recorded messages. It gets old after the second time and irritating after the third.
The PA announcer is great but a voice in the background is not a replacement for a mascot or person working the crowd.
Kingsport celebrated the 4th by having fireworks at 5:45 AM. A lady at the game told us that it was a first for Kingsport and that is the way they are.
