Great small-town ball -- 2002-07-10
Howard Johnson Stadium, with it's Seaver Pavilion (How Cardinal fans must cringe!) has been a Cardinal farm team for a very, very long time, and it is hard to avoid having a sense of this history. The ballpark is right where downtown Johnson City used to be, before that moved out to State of Franklin Avenue, so traffic is never a problem. Neither is parking. It's nice to see idiosyncracies, like the sloping berm in right field. MLB wants them to level it off, but Johnson City says "Why? It's always been there." One downside is the very aggressive campaign to protect spectators from the ball---every seat is behind screen, and the screen behind the plate is more like chain-link fence, all with lots of support mechanisms that further obstruct the view. Appy League baseball is good baseball, and Johnson City is a good baseball town.

Howard Johnson Field is one of my favorite places to see a game. The right field warning track is actually an incline, which can cause some interesting problems for fielders unused to the configuration. The stands have been upgraded in the last 5 years and the seating is very intimate and comfortable.
