    scrappy Burlington -- 2002-02-07

I've been to maybe two dozen Burlington Indians games over the years. The organization is what a friend of mine calls "scrappy." The stadium isn't much to look at, just a small covered stand behind home plate and metal bleachers down the baselines. The concessions are standard pizza, nachos, etc. It's pleasantly dumpy.

There is very little artifice here. Tickets are cheap (I want to say something like $4 for the bleachers), and the worst seat in the house is still right on top of the field. Parking is free, in a gravel lot right beside the ballpark, and there's usually a helpful policeman directing things to make sure it runs relatively smoothly. Getting out of the lot after the game tends to take a while, but no longer than a walk to more distant parking would take. The park is pretty hard to find, but the people ticket office are pros at giving directions, so give them a call.

Games generally don't sell out, so you can change seats a lot, to get different views. This is Rookie league ball, so the play is as rough as it gets. Lots of errors and pitching changes, and usually one or two legitimate prospects who play far better than their peers.

I really love the seeing the Indians play. Don't expect a "field of dreams" type experience. Instead you'll see gritty small-town baseball, played in a relaxed and almost ad-hoc setting. It's an experience that's hard to find in today's minor league baseball, and I highly recommend it for every serious fan.
