Angels Stadium itinerary by Wise Guides

The Angels play in suburban Anaheim, the city built by a mouse. Disneyland, and the adjacent California Adventure Park, is about two miles west of Angel Stadium, so it's possible to do Disney during the day and catch an Angels night game. ... Now that that's out of the way, there's why you really came. Angel Stadium may be miles from the buzz of Los Angeles but it's right off the freeway and hard to miss with the 23-story high 'A' standing at the edge of the parking lot. ... After you park, stroll over to JT Schmid's, a micro-brewery with good eats that's within easy walking distance. Rather than decide among their tasty brews, order a flight of different ones. ... Angel Stadium is one of the oldest parks in the majors now, but it has had a lot of work done. The most recognizable feature today is the reproduction of the rocky California coast in left-center field, complete with faux rocks and mountain stream. ... The park has been abuzz since the team captured the World Series in 2002 (pay attention, MLB execs). The run to that title launched a tradition that remains today: an appearance by the Rally Monkey on the jumbotron. The monkey is pretty much a cult figure among Angels fans but luckily it's not overdone, as the conditions have to be right (the home team rallying from behind) for him to appear. ... Food options at Angel Stadium trend toward the chain, so stick with the good ol' grilled hot dog from California-based Farmer John. ... Owner Arte Moreno became a hero when after buying the team he announced he was lowering beer prices, and you can still get a small beer for less than $5. But who wants a small when there's The Bomber? It's 20 fluid ounces of refreshing brew, Corona or Pacifico, with a south-of-the-border flair. The key is the salt-rimmed glass (plastic cup, actually) with the lime wedge hanging off the side. You may be hesitant to have a brew dressed up like a margarita, but dive in. ... If you're hungry as the game ends, head a couple miles north on the Orange Freeway to Blake's Place, a great barbeque joint in Anaheim. After filling up there, you can easily hop on the Riverside Freeway (91) back into LA. ... The megalopolis of Los Angeles, of course, has as much to offer as any city in the United States. There are the famous beaches, with must-sees the Venice boardwalk and the Santa Monica Pier. There are hills to hike and Hollywood and Beverly Hills to explore, and a dynamic nightlife. Or just cruise Sunset Boulevard and get a flavor of everything LA has to offer.

    driving there -- 2003-11-04

From L.A., on the 5 South, take the Diamond Lane that begins when you cross into Orange County. The Gene Autry Way offramp aims you directly inot the stadium parking lot. this is very convenient. There can be gridlock close to game time on the surface streets.

    hot dogs -- 2003-06-30

Thank you Darryl for the valuable information on where to obtain a REAL hot dog at Edison Field. I love the Angels, I love the field, but they ruined the atmosphere by taking out the good ball park hot dogs!

    Thanks again and GO ANGELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good hot dogs...if you know where to look. -- 2002-09-04

Most others have noted the best and worst of the Big Ed, but somehow don't know where the good hot dogs are. Most of the hot dogs at the Ed are of the Weinerschnitzel (a local chain) variety and just so-so. But in center field, behind the water-spouting rocks is Autry's Barbecue with 1 lb. grilled, all-beef All Star dogs...yummy.

We get these and head back to our seats where our neighbors, with their limp little weinees, look at us with envy.

You can also get them with a combo that includes corn bread and a grilled ear of corn. They're only $2 more than the regular dogs.

Having recently completed an 8 game in 7 night swing of the west, I would have to say that Edison Field is one of the nicer ballparks I have attended. The staff, the seats, the extra curricular events that go on during and after the game made for a great time. Check out Friday nights too....Fireworks after the game were great.

    A nice place to watch a game -- 2001-07-13

I recently attended a game at Edison Field, and I have to say I was very impressed. They have remodeled it to look like a combination of Dodgers Stadium, Quallcom (in San Diego), and what I think looks a bit like the new Comiskey in Chicago. I think it is a quality stadium, and makes for a very enjoyable game. The fans are extremely laid back, though, but at least they aren't doing the wave like at Dodgers Stadium. I think it is one of the top 10 fields in the country now. I know many people may disagree, but see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

My Own Two Cents (which won't buy much here) -- 2001-06-08

While quite a climb up, the sight-lines are much better in the upper deck (what they insist on calling "view" at the Ed), also good for avoiding a close look at the home uniforms. Food is pricey and so-so inside, but they've never stopped me from bringing in something from any of the several restaurants along Katella and State College Aves. Much more fun that 10 years ago, as most of the old football addition was removed, there are bigger crowds (even if a bit too sedentary unless they bring out the "Rally Monkey" from "Friends"), and there are (usually) fewer beach balls to dodge these days. Now if they could just get someone to remove the curse that seems to be placed on the bats of whomever the Angels use to DH?

Better now that the Rams are gone -- 2001-06-03

The Rams did to the Big A what the 49ers did to the Stick and what Al Davis did to the park in Oakland....enclosed the outfield with seating. The Edison Field was much improve when they tore down those seats. Now they need to get rid of the fake green hitters background with the fake rocks, not to mention their ugly home uniforms.

    The Big Ed -- 2001-05-24

Edison Field is quietly one of the nicest parks in the bigs. Everything is clean and well maintained. Pretty much anywhere you sit, you will get a great view of a beautifully manicured field. The fake rocks in center field would look more realistic if they didn't extend into the hitters backdrop, but in a way they add to the very Disneyland feel that the whole complex exhibits. The main gate to the stadium is flanked by giant bats and the ticket booths are more suited for the enterance to a theme-park coaster. Again, this is fitting, because the Angels had a very up and down 2000 season. That leads me to the main attraction at any Angels game: the Rally Monkey. If the Angels are trailing at the start of the 8th inning, the video screen plays a video of a monkey in an Angels jersey jumping up and down with a caption that reads "Rally Time." The crowd goes crazy, rally caps are fashioned, and more often than not, the Angels come back. I have been a first-hand witness to the awesome power of the Rally Monkey.

One caveat, though, 8-ounce beers are $6. Ouch! by far the most expensive beer in baseball.

    Too Much Disney... -- 2001-05-24

Edison Int'l Field was formerly the 'Big A', where the likes of Reggie Jackson, Don Baylor and Wally Joyner entertained anyone who couldn't get a ticket to Dodger Stadium. A few years ago, the Rams left town and the Angels took the opportunity to 're-do' their home park.

From the outside, Edison has it over the old 'Big A'. The clay colors and retro design are visually sharp. Inside, Edison is clean and well-kept, with an efficient and polite demeanor. That's about where the positives end.

The sightlines from the field level are horrible. My first visit in 1998, I spent the whole game craning my neck to see home plate. Our seats were field level, just beyond third base and I'm 6'0" tall. I returned the following year up in the loge section, 2nd level. Same thing. I recommend finding the scalpers out front and paying a little more the choice seats near home plate.

The antiseptic feel of the field and quasi rock formation just feel too 'Disney'...not at all like baseball should feel. The food is mostly forgettable, so hit The National Sports Grill just up the street before you go. And don't get me started on those Angels home uniforms...

    I Love Anaheim -- 2001-03-18

Even Though I am from Toronto, Anaheim will always be my favourite team...because Nolan Ryan pitched the very first game I saw back in 1977 against Toronto.
