I thought it might be interesting to look at the players who have gone an entire season without walking or being hit by a pitch. Here are the leaders in terms of plate appearances:

Thats quite a pitching staff! Among the position players, there seems to be a lot of terrible seasons even as far as batting average is concerned. In fact, the most plate appearances anyone has had in a season without a hit or walk and yet managed to hit .300 was 84 by Carlos Zambrano in 2005.

There are certain players who seem to be quite adept at avoiding walks including active leader Livan Hernandez . However to do so in multiple times (with at least 50 PA) as a position player is a feat only accomplished by Alex Diaz . There are also players who have done it for a career including active leader Doug Brocail.

One more group of lists. Anyone who has accomplished this feat and also hit a sacrifice fly (career) will have an OBP lower than his batting average. While this is not an inclusive list of all such players, it is interesting none-the-less.

  1. Let’s see the list with pitchers eliminated.

  2. I was just referring to the players without a 1 listed in the position column.

  3. The coolest trivia item will always be Billy Beane’s 1989 season.

  4. A few of those guys, including Beane, have OBPs lower than their BA!

  6. I guess if you have more sac hits than walks or HBP, your OBP will reflect that.

  7. Von SF’s are charged as a PA even though it is nmot charged as an AB.

The 2nd non pitcher on the list was Alejandro Sanchez of the 85 Tigers. This is about the time that the City of Cincinatti was considering honoring Pete Rose for one minute by turning every traffic light in the city Red.

I called the Tigers PR department and suggested that they should try to get the City of Detroit to make every crosswalk signal read DONT WALK in honor of Sanchez.

Nope, they didn’t find it funny either.

  8. Johnny Sain’s 1946 season was amazing! He didn’t even strike out ONCE that year. He put the ball in play ever single time he came to the plate. He only struck out 20 times in over 800 career PA.
