I guess it’s not so rare
Now that I am paying attention to zero-strikeout starts by pitchers, I have learned that it’s not as rare as I thought.
Roger Clemens pulled it off last night, and Peter Abraham writes in the LoHud Yankees blog with some interesting notes about Clemens’ history of no-K starts. (Incidentally, if you are interested in Yankees news, whether an actual Yankees fan or not, Abraham’s blog is simply the best there is. He’s got great information but is an unbiased a beat reported as I have ever seen.)
This is a bit off-topic, but I wanted to point out some of the hard-luck pitchers so far this year. These are using B-R.com’s PI Pitching Game Finder.
First, most times so far in 2007 that a starter has gotten the loss in a game where he pitched at least 7 innings and allowed 2 or fewer earned runs:
Year Games Link to Individual Games +-----------------+----+-----+-------------------------+ Noah Lowry 2007 3 Ind. Games Matt Cain 2007 3 Ind. Games Carlos Silva 2007 2 Ind. Games Johan Santana 2007 2 Ind. Games Andy Pettitte 2007 2 Ind. Games Matt Morris 2007 2 Ind. Games Derek Lowe 2007 2 Ind. Games Doug Davis 2007 2 Ind. Games Mark Buehrle 2007 2 Ind. Games Joe Blanton 2007 2 Ind. Games
Jayson Stark wrote recently about just how good Matt Cain has been this year. He probably deserves at least 3 more wins.
And now, the same criteria, but where the starter got a no-decision:
Jeremy Guthrie 2007 5 Ind. Games Ian Snell 2007 3 Ind. Games James Shields 2007 3 Ind. Games Jake Peavy 2007 3 Ind. Games Roy Oswalt 2007 3 Ind. Games Joe Kennedy 2007 3 Ind. Games Tim Hudson 2007 3 Ind. Games Danny Haren 2007 3 Ind. Games Aaron Harang 2007 3 Ind. Games Jon Garland 2007 3 Ind. Games Zach Duke 2007 3 Ind. Games Erik Bedard 2007 3 Ind. Games Bronson Arroyo 2007 3 Ind. Games
How about Jeremy Guthrie? He’s flown under the radar because he has only 4 wins, but he deserves at least 3-4 more. He’s got a WHIP of 0.92 so far this year, and he’s making “only” $380,000. As Abraham pointed out in the link above, Clemens makes more than twice that per start.
What details can you give about the 12 starting pitchers that have pitched into extra innings and had no strikeouts…

Interesting. I’ve got 14 who did it. Sometimes these comments get blocked as spam, so I’ll try post the full list in another post.

and that’s just since 1957…

The two extra games you listed were the 1980 Katt game and the 1961 Purkey game.
My list was made of just 10+ innings and not “9.2”

Bug report. Matt Cain has 3 ind. games. But if you click on the link you actually get four games showing in the report.
