June 3, 1975: Drafted by the Houston Astros in the 23rd round of the 1975 amateur draft, but did not sign.

January 7, 1976: Drafted by the New York Mets in the 4th round of the 1976 amateur draft (January Secondary).

December 5, 1978: Traded by the New York Mets with Tom Grieve to the St. Louis Cardinals for Pete Falcone.

December 8, 1980: Traded by the St. Louis Cardinals with Terry Kennedy, John Littlefield, Al Olmsted, Mike Phillips, Steve Swisher and John Urrea to the San Diego Padres for a player to be named later, Rollie Fingers, Bob Shirley and Gene Tenace. The San Diego Padres sent Bob Geren (December 10, 1980) to the St. Louis Cardinals to complete the trade.

May 22, 1982: Traded by the San Diego Padres to the Montreal Expos for Jerry Manuel.
