Perkins has tossed 9 1/3 scoreless innings to begin the year. Perkins' fastball has gone as high as 95 mph this season. 'He had to find out, and we had to find out, what he had,' Gardenhire said of Nathan. 'We had to start him out as our closer. The other role wasn't really set up for him as far as starting the season. Closing was the way it should've been. And if everything didn't work out right away, we could make adjustments. And that's what we saw. And now he sees he has work to do, so it makes it easy for all of us to work our way back to it.'
