'Daisuke obviously didn't have his good stuff tonight,' manager Bobby Valentine said. 'He went out with a crink in his neck, and we were hoping he was going to work through it.' He allowed five earned runs and four hits while walking two in one-plus inning, his shortest outing of his career.
7/2KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Red Sox | Daisuke Matsuzaka's command improving: Boston Red Sox SP Daisuke Matsuzaka has just four walks in 22 innings, and he has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than three...[+] to one. However, he's still 0-2 with a 4.90 ERA and has had trouble in the first inning of his outings. The team had changed his pre-game routine in fear that his elbow would tighten up if he was allowed too much time in between his warm-ups and the start of the game. Matsuzaka is stretching his pre-game routine out as he becomes more confident with his health. 'One of the things we decided on was he'd warm up a little earlier, take a little longer so he can go in, change his shirt, cool down a little bit and then go back out,' said assistant pitching coach Randy Niemann. 'Now he's actually going in as he does in the second inning.' Pitching coach Bob McClure has been impressed with the life of Matsuzaka's fastball. However, he's still not very efficient, averaging 17 pitches per inning. McClure is trying to get Matsuzaka to be more aggressive now that he appears to be fully healthy.
