pitcher for RP Aroldis Chapman isn't set in stone. 'Nothing is in stone right now,' assistant general manager Bob Miller said. 'We told (Chapman) before he left to prepare like he was coming in as a starter. That's the hard part, preparing as a starter. There's nothing set in stone. When we talked to Jonathan, we said you're going to be in the backend of the bullpen.' Chapman threw only 71 2/3 innings last year, so expecting him to top 200 innings in 2013 is unrealistic. He threw only 109 innings as a starter in 2010, and he threw 118 1/3 innings in Cuba in 2009.

difference is his tempo,' C Ryan Hanigan said. 'He gets the ball, gets right on the mound and he doesn't dwell on throwing a ball or walking a guy. He gets right back in and it looks to me that all that's going through his head is making the adjustment to get his mechanics working like they should, if they're not. And if they are, he just goes right at you and keeps coming.' The team is in no rush to move him to the starting rotation, though.

relaxed and isn't sidetracked with mental issues he dealt with last season. 'He had some things on his mind,' Baker said. 'That's a part of it. The difference in the concentration level when you have things on your mind and when your mind is clear is big. It's a very delicate mental game. He's more relaxed. He's more engaging. He knows our society, our system better.' Chapman also realizes he doesn't need to throw as hard to have good results. 'Certainly, the obvious thing is his command,' pitching coach Bryan Price said. 'He's able to repeat his delivery. He also has a better understanding that he doesn't have to throw 105 to get hitters out. He's using his two-seam fastball, which will sacrifice a little bit of velocity for movement.' Price also stated that Chapman is mixing in his slider much more this year, and the preparation for the move to the rotation this spring aided in that transformation.
