4/14KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Cardinals | Two relievers not likely for long relief: St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa feels that RPs Eduardo Sanchez and Fernando Salas are not fit to be throwing multiple...[+] innings in relief out of the bullpen, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold. Sanchez struck out five of the seven hitters he faced in two innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday, April 13. RP Raul Valdes, who is currently in the minors, is an option as a lefty long reliever. RP Miguel Batista will not be used in the long relief role with the pen short on capable arms. La Russa now sees Batista as a legitimate option in the late innings.
4/13KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Cardinals | Mitchell Boggs, Jason Motte not ready to be closers: St. Louis Cardinals RPs Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday,...[+] April 12, and Boggs showed better command of his slider while striking out the side in the ninth inning, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold. Manager Tony La Russa recently said Boggs and Motte are not ready for ninth-inning duties if RP Ryan Franklin needed a rest. 'They're making progress,' pitching coach Dave Duncan stated. 'We're not the kind of club that can afford on-the-job training. We don't consider ourselves a developing club. We consider ourselves a club that is contending for a division championship. I don't think it's in their best interest or our best interest to do on-the-job training with those guys, so to speak. There'll be a point in time when one or both of them will be ready to do that.' Franklin was warming up to pitch the ninth inning Tuesday, which shows the team is still confident that he can serve as their closer. If Franklin is unavailable to pitch in the ninth, the team is more likely to use RPs Miguel Batista or Trever Miller for a save. La Russa thinks Motte needs to expand his repertoire and Boggs needs to control the types of pitches he uses, most notably his slider.

2/24KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Cardinals | More on Kyle McClellan: Updating a previous item, St. Louis Cardinals Ps Miguel Batista and Kyle McClellan will only be candidates to move to the rotation...[+] if the team can find a replacement for them in the bullpen, according to FOXSportsMidwest.com's B.J. Rains. 'That's the argument for either Miguel or Kyle,' manager Tony La Russa said. 'Kyle, every year he's more important. You have to win games at the end like you do at the beginning. We never wanted to penalize Kyle. In the end, you look at what's best for your pitching staff, not just your rotation. Kyle is in a great position. He's a valuable member of the bullpen. But maybe he's the best starter.' La Russa said that the final spot in the bullpen is Batista's to lose this spring. SP Raul Valdes could be an intriguing wild card for the final rotation spot.
2/24KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Cardinals | Plan to fill rotation hole from within: St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and general manager John Mozeliak said they plan to fill the extra spot in the rotation...[+] from within, according to MLB.com's Matthew Leach. Right now, RP Kyle McClellan appears to be the front-runner for the job after SP Adam Wainwright (elbow) has been pronounced out for the year. However, if McClellan is converted to a starter, it would put more pressure on RPs Mitchell Boggs and Jason Motte in the bullpen. If the team goes with either SPs Lance Lynn or P.J. Walters, it wouldn't tax the bullpen as much. Pitching coach Dave Duncan has made it no secret that he prioritizes the rotation above the bullpen, and that he is a backer of McClellan. SPs Miguel Batista and Ian Snell both appear to be long shots for the extra spot. Batista is likely to be the team's swing man. SP Adam Ottavino (shoulder) is coming off a shoulder injury and is unlikely to win the spot.
2/23KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Cardinals | Several pitchers could step up: St. Louis Cardinals SPs Miguel Batista, Ian Snell, P.J. 2/23KFFL.com Hot off the Wire: Cardinals | Miguel Batista heavy favorite for relief spot: St. Louis Cardinals RP Miguel Batista is a heavy favorite for the team's seventh relief spot, according to MLB.com's Matthew Leach....[+] Both manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan are happy with what they have seen so far.
