April 22, 1997: Traded by the New York Yankees with Ruben Rivera and $3,000,000 to the San Diego Padres for Gordon Amerson (minors) and Homer Bush. The San Diego Padres sent Hideki Irabu (May 29, 1997) and Vernon Maxwell (minors) (June 9, 1997) to the New York Yankees to complete the trade.

December 15, 1997: Traded by the San Diego Padres with Steve Hoff (minors) and Derrek Lee to the Florida Marlins for Kevin Brown.
