Before 1936 Season: Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent.

January 22, 1943: Traded by the New York Yankees with Ed Levy and $10,000 to the Philadelphia Blue Jays for Nick Etten. Al Gettel and Ed Levy returned to original team on March 26, 1943. The New York Yankees sent Tom Padden (March 26, 1943) and Al Gerheauser (March 26, 1943) to the Philadelphia Blue Jays to complete the trade.

December 6, 1946: Traded by the New York Yankees with Gene Bearden and Hal Peck to the Cleveland Indians for Sherm Lollar and Ray Mack.

June 2, 1948: Traded by the Cleveland Indians with Pat Seerey to the Chicago White Sox for Bob Kennedy.

July 12, 1949: Purchased by the Washington Senators from the Chicago White Sox.

August 15, 1949: Purchased by Oakland (PCL) from the Washington Senators. (Date given is approximate. Exact date is uncertain.)

October 11, 1950: Traded by Oakland (PCL) with Ray Noble and Artie Wilson to the New York Giants for Wes Bailey (minors), Bill Ayers, Bert Haas, Joe Lafata and $125,000.

July 27, 1951: Purchased by Oakland (PCL) from the New York Giants.

August 20, 1955: Purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals from Oakland (PCL).
