December 2, 1963: Drafted by the Chicago Cubs from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1963 first-year draft.

May 4, 1968: Traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Houston Astros for Aaron Pointer.

February 12, 1969: Purchased by the St. Louis Cardinals from the Houston Astros.

October 7, 1969: Traded by the St. Louis Cardinals with Curt Flood, Joe Hoerner and Tim McCarver to the Philadelphia Phillies for Dick Allen, Jerry Johnson and Cookie Rojas. Curt Flood refused to report to his new team. The St. Louis Cardinals sent Willie Montanez (April 8, 1970) and Jim Browning (minors) (August 30, 1970) to the Philadelphia Phillies to complete the trade.
