Zhe Chen has been a member of the Chinese national team at times. In the 1998 Baseball World Cup, he went 3 for 26 with a walk as China's first baseman but he did drive in a game-winner against South Africa. He played in the 2002 Asian Games, 2002 World University Championship (2 for 16, BB), 2003 Asian Championship, 2005 Asian Championship and 2005 Asia Series. He was China's top batter in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, hitting .375/.444/.542. He made no errors at first base and had 6 assists in 7 games there. He was China's first baseman in all three of their games at the 2006 World Baseball Classic but managed only one single in 11 at-bats.
