In December 1968 the Yakult beverage company bought the Sankei Atoms. While the team was being transferred to Yakult it spent part of the 1969 season as the Atoms. The team did not fare well, including a 33-92 season in 1970 when the team hit .215 collectively. In 1973 the team changed their moniker to the Yakult Swallows, bringing back a nickname from the team's olden days as the Kokutetsu Swallows.
