The Woori Heroes were formed in 2008 when the Hyundai Unicorns were sold. Woori Tobacco agreed to fund 10 billion won a year for three years to sponsor the new team, which is based in Seoul. The move drew criticism from anti-smoking activists in South Korea. The club went 50-76 to finish 7th in the 2008 KBO with a few bright lights such as Won-sam Jang (12-8, 2.85) and Il-young Ma (11-11, 3.49). The team was managed by veteran skipper Kwang-hwan Lee. When Woori withdrew its financial support, the team became the Seoul Heroes for 2009.
