The South Atlantic League expanded in 2001, adding a club in Wilmington, NC. The new Wilmington Waves were a Los Angeles Dodgers affiliate managed by Dino Ebel. The Waves finished 73-63 for 6th place in the SAL, which now boasted 16 clubs. Attendance was 135,548, 9th in the loop. Jose Rojas (10-3, 2.12) was second in the SAL in ERA while Greg Bauer (1-1, 17 Sv, 1.78) was a good closer. C Koyie Hill hit .301/.368/.398 with 21 steals and made the league's All-Star team at catcher; he had finished 7th in the league in average. The team's 278 steals were 57 more than any other team in the league. Three outfielders topped 40 swipes - Candido Martinez stole 54, Shane Victorino had 47 and Reggie Abercrombie 44. Two other players, including Hill, topped 20, another 2 had 15 or more and another 3 were in double digits, giving the team 10 players with 10 or more steals. After failing to secure a deal for a new stadium the team moved to Columbus, GA after one season and became the South Georgia Waves.
