Wiley Davis, "The Squirrel Hunter", pitched two games in the majors in 1896, winning one of them.
"A MEMORY OF WILEY DAVIS. . . Wiley Davis, the 'Squirrel Hunter', came with a reputation of control that was unequalled. During the off-season Wiley was pictured as as knocking squirrels out of trees by simply using rocks instead of a shotgun!" - Sporting Life, July 20, 1912
"A good story of Wiley Davis, the Knoxville phenom, has been told us as to how he became a pitcher. He, as is already known, is a farmer boy and a lover of field sports. Being sadly in need of a gun, and not having the cash to put into one, he took to killing his game with a stone. In this he became very expert, and it is said that he was able to knock a squirrel down at 20 yards nearly every time. Some Knoxville sports saw his feats of dexterity . . . and the rest is known." - Sporting Life of Nov. 2, 1895
