Third baseman Whitey Ries played a dozen seasons in the minors and batted .300 five times. He made his pro debut with the Decatur Commodores in 1947. In 1953, he hit .329 with 10 home runs and 89 RBI for the Denver Bears, and he knocked 11 homers the next year with the Omaha Cardinals. He never topped 11 home runs in a season but hit a fair number of doubles.

Ries also was a player-manager with the Dothan Cardinals in 1956 and the Belmont Chiefs in 1961 (May 27 - July 17).
