With a name like "Whammy", you might have thought that Whammy Douglas got beat up pretty badly in the majors, but that wasn't the case. At the age of 22, Whammy got into 11 games, 47 innings, with the 1957 Pittsburgh Pirates and had a 3-3 record with an ERA of 3.26, on a team whose overall ERA was 3.88. He did, however, give up 6 unearned runs, and his 30 walks in 47 innings was a bit high.
He pitched in 1958 for the Columbus Jets. In 1959, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds organization, but never appeared in the majors with them. It was a major trade, where the Pirates sent Frank Thomas, Whammy, and others to the Cincinnati Reds for Smoky Burgess, Harvey Haddix, and Don Hoak. The Pirates went on to win the pennant in 1960, and the Reds went on to win the pennant in 1961, so both were tough teams on which to earn a spot.
One source says he had a glass eye.
