Western Association
From BR Bullpen
The first Western Associations have their histories somewhat intertwined with the Western League's. From 1888-1891, and 1893, the Western League was known as the Western Association.
The next Western Association ran from 1894-1897 and 1899 and was renamed the Central League in 1900. The league was centered around Illinois and Iowa, but reached to Nebraska and Denver, CO early on.
In 1901 another Western Association was started, this time centered around Ohio and Indiana. It only lasted one year.
In 1905, the Missouri Valley League was renamed the Western Association. The league was designated as class C until 1911, when it was given a D rating. It operated in this class from 1914-1917 and also in 1920-21 . In 1922 the league regained its class C status and oprated from 1922-1932 and 1934-1942 when it shut down during WW II. It returned as a class C in 1946 and continued until 1954. Joplin, Ft. Smith, Topeka, St. Joseph, Hutchinson and Muskogee were all long-time members.
