In 1872 Washington first joined the National Association. The team was managed by Joe Miller, who led his team to a last place 0-11 record. The team's pitcher was Bill Stearns.

In 1875 baseball returned to Washington with the team of the same name, in the same league, led by managers Holly Hollingshead and Bill Parks. The team finished in 9th place with a 5-23 record. Bill Stearns pitched for the team again alongside co-manager Parks.

Baseball would not return to Washington for another nine years, when the American Association would revive the name of the Nationals.
