[edit] Biographical Information
Outfielder Walton Cruise had his ups and downs in the majors. In his best season, 1921, he was fourth in the National League in batting average, second in on-base percentage, and sixth in slugging percentage.
Cruise was nearly 24 when he broke in with the 1914 St. Louis Cardinals, and spent his entire major league career with the Cardinals and the Boston Braves, being sold to the Braves in mid-1919.
On the 1917 Cardinals, he was second in homers and RBI to the young Rogers Hornsby. In 1918, although playing only 70 games, his 6 homers were second in the league.
Cruise played all the outfield positions, with 317 games in left, 153 in center, and 205 in right field.
He was the first player to ever hit a ball out of Braves Field, which he did in 1917 as a Cardinal. Later, in 1921 as a Brave, he hit the second ball ever hit out of the park.
He scored a run in the famous 26-inning tie game played in 1920.
