Waldis Joaquin made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2009.
He began his professional career in 2004 with the DSL Giants, going 6-1 with a 1.61 ERA. He spent 2005 with the AZL Giants and went 1-1 with a 3.64 ERA in 29 2/3 innings. He also struck out 37 batters. He did not play in 2006 following right elbow surgery. He returned to the diamond in 2007 pitching for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, with whom he went 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 38 innings. In 2008, he played for the San Jose Giants and Augusta Greenjackets, going a combined 1-3 with a 4.42 ERA in 71 1/3 innings.
Joaquin began 2009 with the Connecticut Defenders, going 4-5 with a save and a 2.67 ERA in 36 games. He allowed only a .190 average and no home runs in 54 innings. He was called up to the majors to replace Ryan Sadowski. Joaquin made only one appearance in his first trip to The Show, facing Houston. Joaquin relieved Justin Miller with a 8-0 lead in the 9th. He retired Hunter Pence on a grounder. Carlos Lee doubled and Miguel Tejada singled. Chris Coste grounded in Lee then Jeff Keppinger whiffed to end the game. Joaquin was then demoted to AAA.
