[edit] Introduction and career
Vic Correll was a catcher who came into the big leagues with a bang, hitting .500 in 4 at-bats in 1972, and went out with a bang, hitting .421 in 19 at-bats in 1980. In between, he couldn't muster anything over .238
Correll had been at Georgia Southern University at the same time as Ken Szotkiewicz. Drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the ninth round in 1967, he was listed on the Indians 1969 spring roster after leading Western Carolinas League catchers with 73 assists in 1968, while hitting .286. Correll was released in 1971, signed by the Chicago White Sox, and drafted from the White Sox by the Boston Red Sox with whom he broke into the majors in 1972.
From 1974-76 he had at least 200 at-bats each year with the Atlanta Braves. He played behind Johnny Oates in 1974, and was the starting catcher in 1975-76. Biff Pocoroba became the starter in 1977, and Correll was released near the end of spring training in 1978.
A few days later the Cincinnati Reds signed him, and he spent three years with them. He was the # 2 catcher behind Johnny Bench in 1978-79. The Reds won the division in 1979, but Correll did not appear in post-season play.
