Vern Handrahan was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and did not play organized baseball until he was 15. Playing in semi-pro ball in 1958, he caught the attention of scouts and he was signed by the Milwaukee Braves in 1959.
He pitched in the minors from 1959-70, was in the majors in 1964 and 1966, and also played winter ball in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. In a minor league game in 1962 he struck out 19. In 1967 with Birmingham he came close to pitching a perfect game.
After his playing days he scouted for the Montreal Expos.
