Despite being born in Puerto Rico, Valmy Thomas spent his childhood in the United States Virgin Islands and is considered the first MLB player from there. His parents lived in the Virgin Islands: his mother briefly visited Puerto Rico to give birth, believing the medical care to be better there.
Thomas' main teammates were Willie Mays, Daryl Spencer and Johnny Antonelli.
While he wasn't really from Puerto Rico, Thomas did play winter league ball there. He also played in Canada and in the Dominican Republic. Source: Diamonds Around the Globe, which has a photo of him.
