UNC-Wilmington opened in 1947 as a two-year school called Wilmington College. The school became a four year school in July 1963. UNCW sponsored baseball as a junior college from 1957 to 1964, winning the NJCAA Baseball World Series in 1961 and 1963. The school was a member of the NAIA from 1965 to 1976 and has been NCAA Division-I since 1977.
