The University of California campus in Berkeley is often called simply the University of California or Cal, as it was the first of the UC campuses and thus for a while the only one.
The pitcher with the most major league victories who went to Cal is Andy Messersmith. The players from Cal with the most major league at-bats are Jeff Kent and Jackie Jensen.
Due to budget problems in the state of California, it was announced the the school would be dropping baseball after 2010-2011 school year. A fund raising drive by supporters of the program was able to raise $9 million in order to save the program. Golden Bears alumnus Jeff Kent and agent Scott Boras contributed to the drive.
