Ulysses S. Grant

Died: July 23, 1885 in Mount McGregor, NY USA

Ulysses S. Grant was a hugely popular soldier and politician in the 19th Century who was the 18th President of the United States. He was president during the time when the National Association was formed and also when the National League was formed, but he does not appear to have attended any games at the time.

When Grant was president, boys used to play baseball on the field that was behind the White House. Grant would sometimes join them to play.

In 1868 Grant and Seymour were candidates for president and teams of their supporters played a game against each other. Source: Baseball in Blue and Gray.

The book The Games Presidents Play states that Grant entertained a team at the White House, but doesn't specify which team or when, or whether it was professional or amateur.
