 Biographical Information
Cloyd was selected by the Phillies in the 18th round of the 2008 amateur draft with Jerry Lafferty doing the scouting. He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Phillies and was excellent (2-0, 0.00, 5 H, 11 K in 11 IP) to earn a quick promotion to the Williamsport Crosscutters, where he was 5-4 with a 4.57 ERA. He split 2009 between the Lakewood BlueClaws (7-3, 3.05) and the Clearwater Threshers (5-6, 4.11). He tied Kyle Drabek for second among Phillies farmhands in wins, trailing only Joe Savery.
In 2010, Cloyd began poorly with Clearwater (4-3, 5.32) but did better after a promotion to the Reading Phillies (1-1, 4.00). He split 2011 between the same two clubs, with better results: 3-1, 2.75 for Clearwater and 6-3, 2.78 for Reading. Overall, he walked only 22 and struck out 138 in 146 innings. He was second in the Phillies chain, .01 behind Julio Rodriguez.
Cloyd began 2012 strong with Reading (3-0, 1.80, 3 BB in 25 IP) and was promoted to the AAA Lehigh Valley IronPigs, where he went 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 22 outings. He was the starting pitcher for the International League in the 2012 AAA All-Star Game and took the loss in a turn of events from how he had been faring so far that year. He began the game by allowing singles to Adam Eaton and Jake Elmore. He recovered to fan Ryan Wheeler then Mike Hessman hit a sacrifice fly. Cloyd walked Luis Jimenez and allowed a run-scoring single to Wil Myers. Kole Calhoun grounded out to end the inning. Matt Harvey relieved Cloyd to begin the 2nd; only one more run would score all day as the IL lost, 3-0.
Cloyd was called up to the majors in late August and made his big league debut for the Phillies on August 29th. Starting against the New York Mets that day, he gave up 3 earned runs over 6 innings and took the loss.
