Tsuneo Horiuchi was a key member of the Yomiuri Giants during their nine consecutive championship seasons.
Horiuchi won the Sawamura Award and the Rookie of the Year Award in his rookie season posting a 16-2 record with a 1.39 ERA. The performance would earn him the nickname "The Wonder Boy". He would have double digit wins for 13 campaigns in a row. His high mark was in 1972 when he achieved 26 victories, earning his second Sawamura Award and the MVP Award. Tsuneo won a third Sawamura Award in 1974. At the end of his playing career, Horiuchi had a 203-139 record including a no hitter, 6 saves, 1865 strikeouts, and a 3.27 ERA. Horiuchi was named to two Best Nine teams and nine All-Star squads. He also won seven consecutive Gold Gloves.
After retirement, Horiuchi coached the Giants during eight seasons and managed them for two. He was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
