[edit] Biographical Information

Tony Dermendziev played two years in the minor leagues and has appeared for the Swedish national team.

Dermendziev was picked by the Houston Astros in the 26th round of the 1991 amateur draft but went on to junior college. He went in the 44th round of the 1992 amateur draft to the Colorado Rockies as a draft and follow. He signed in 1993 and split the year between the AZL Rockies (.318/.395/.418 in 30 G, 17 SB, 0 CS) and the Bend Rockies (.217/.288/.217 in 19 G, 8 SB, 1 CS). He made the Arizona League All-Star team as one of the four outfielders picked. Had Dermendziev qualified, he would have ranked 5th in the Arizona League in average.

The speedy flyhawk hit only .187/.239/.332 for the 1994 Asheville Tourists with just 6 steals in 10 tries. He did show power, with 7 home runs in 187 AB.

Dermendziev then played in the Swedish Elitserien, though statistics are unavailable prior to 2003. In 2004, he hit .500/.620/.768 for Oskarshamn and went 3-3 with a 6.35 ERA. He tied for 4th in the league in steals (13-16) and led in average, slugging and OBP.

During 2005, Tony hit .358/.456/.552 and posted a 1-4, 9.51 record with 42 walks in 35 innings. His 11 steals (in 12 tries) tied for 5th in the circuit. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he was Sweden's center fielder, batting .259/.355/.259 with 7 steals in 8 tries. He was one swipe behind tourney leader Eduardo Paret. From 1988-2005, Dermendziev tied for 4th for most steals in a Baseball World Cup, even with Paret, Rolando Avila and Orlando Hudson and trailing Hirokazu Ibata, Paret and Ralph Milliard by one.

In the 2006 Elitserien, Dermendziev batted .527/.571/.694 in limited time for the Leksand Lumberjacks. In '07, he hit .355/.452/.495 for Tranås and was 3-1 with a 3.97 ERA. He stole 20 bases in 21 tries to finish third in the circuit in swipes. The veteran was 5th with 35 RBI. In the 2007 European Championship, Tony hit .267/.333/.367 for Sweden but did not try to steal once in eight games. He played primarily DH as Peter Johannesen had taken over in center.

During the 2008 Elitserien, Tony batted .342/.422/.447 in limited action for Tranås and went 2-1 with a 9.00 ERA.

Off the diamond, Dermendziev has played quarterback and safety for a number of years with Sweden's Kalmar Unicorns.
