 Biographical Information
Pitcher Tony Chevez was the second Nicaraguan to play in the major leagues, after teammate Dennis Martinez. He was the bigger star at home, and expectations were higher for him. Tony played in the Nicaraguan amateur league as a teenager. He was part of his nation's team in the 1971 Pan American Games, 1972 Amateur World Series and the FEMBA edition of the 1973 Amateur World Series. Just before the end of the 1973 tournament, Chevez and Martinez both signed with the Baltimore Orioles.
Tony pitched very well in the minors and made it to Baltimore early in the 1977 season. He pitched in only four games, however, all in blowouts - and he injured his shoulder in the fourth outing. He never again appeared in the majors.
Tony's son-in-law is Jason Bartlett.
