Tommy Smith played five seasons in the big leagues, getting most of his at-bats for the 1976 Cleveland Indians managed by Frank Robinson. He was the fifth outfielder, behind fourth outfielder John Lowenstein.

Smith had come from North Carolina State University, where he had been at the same time as Mike Caldwell. Drafted by the Indians in the 5th round in 1970, he got his first shot at the majors at age 24 in 1973.

His last year in the majors was with the 1977 Seattle Mariners in their first year.
