Zimmer caught in the minors from 1971-1975 and was a player-manager in 1977. A catcher, he began his professional career at the age of 19. He played until 1979, missing 1976 and 1978, hitting .247 in 318 games. He played in the Cardinals (1971-1975) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (1979) organizations.
Zimmer was a Cardinals' coach in 1976. He managed the 1977 Victoria Rosebuds, 1978 Butte Copper Kings, 1979 Shelby Pirates, and 1980 Salinas Angels. He then moved to scouting for the San Francisco Giants, a position he took in around 1981 and one he still holds today. Zimmer later coached the St. Petersburg Pelicans of the Senior Professional Baseball Association.
